Bata-kusai
- Lectures on Literature is a compilation of classes delivered by Nabokov, in Wellesley and Cornell, during the 40s and 50s.
- Focused on European literature. There are other two compilations, one about Don Quixote and one about Russian literature.
- Some specific works are analyzed, and generalities are discussed from there. The discussed pieces are:
- Mansfield Park, Jane Austen
- Bleak House, Charles Dickens
- Madame Bovary, Flaubert
- …
- Nabo stands up for rereading. In my eyes, because initial reads are less meditated, this is, put one in less close contact with the work.
- My take would be less instructionalist. For me reading creates too much of a volatile experience, and too little of a robust set of learnings. Coming back to a known text may or may not bring you closer to the author, or provoke better, deeper, more realistic insights. What it will bring is just a new virgin space from which to think the text again, from zero, even if we now own better tooling to work there. Rereading is to let a new man swim in a new river, to put it simply.
- Rereading as a chance of updating against oneself.
- Nabo is a big sucker for Dickens
